September 11, 2020 by Richie Of Belize

Spending time as a family is perhaps one of the single most important aspects of parenting. Often when traveling as a family, we choose destinations that will cater to the wants of all family members, even the little ones. Luckily it’s not that hard to please our children as long as there is plenty of fun involved, and Ambergris Caye has lots of family FUN to offer!

The world’s second largest barrier reef at our front door, no wonder can’t seem to keep the kids out of the water. Parasailing, fishing, kayaking, kite surfing, jet skiing, snorkelling and diving are just some of the many family friendly activities that can be done. Trust us, you child won’t soon forget snorkelling with sharks at Shark Ray Alley or swimming with a turtle at Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

While fun in the water seems to be the most common activities children enjoy while on Ambergris Caye, there is also some fun to be had on land. ATV riding and cycling are great ways kids can explore the island while enjoying the scenic nature views. Marco Gonzalez Archaeological Site is another great choice for a family friendly adventure which allows kids explore a piece of the ancient Maya world.

Festivals and Celebrations on Ambergris Caye!

September 11, 2020 by Richie Of Belize

It may seem that there is a festival every month on Ambergris Caye, from the start of the year to the end, San Pedro loves a good celebration. Here are some of the festivals celebrated on Ambergris Caye:

New Year’s Eve Block Party – San Pedro ushers in the New Year with a grand block party considered the best in all the country. Central Park comes alive on New Year’s Eve with live music and dance performances. At the stroke of midnight, a brilliant fireworks display lights up the sky. The party goes on till the wee hours of January 1st.

El Gran Carnaval de San Pedro – A cultural event dating back centuries, San Pedro’s 4-day Carnaval is colourful homage to the Spanish culture. It kicks off with a block party followed by three days of painting and fun. The celebration ends on Ash Wednesday with the traditional burning of Juan Carnaval.

Easter – Easter on Ambergris Caye means beach parties. The island’s prime beach spots hosts grand parties on Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday with much music and revelry. Top stop to be include the Boca Del Rio Beach and Secret Beach.

San Pedro Lobster Fest – It’s all about the Spiny Lobster! Lobster Fest is a weeklong festival that start on June 15th, the opening of the Lobster Fishing Season in Belize. Throughout the week, restaurants and bars host lobster themed parties. The festival culminates in a block party with live music and plenty lobster to eat.

Dia de San Pedro – On June 28th, San Pedro pays homage to its patron saint, Saint Peter. While the Catholic Church host an array of religious activities such as a boat procession and blessings, the San Pedro Town Council celebrates the island’s special day with a fishing tournament during the day and a festival at night

September Celebrations – There isn’t a more festive month in all of Belize than September. We consider it to be our most patriotic month of the year as it host two of the country’s most important holidays, The Battle of St. George’s Caye Day and Independence Day. The entire month if full activities but the highlight is the block party on Independence Day Eve and of course, the Independence Day parade.

Garifuna Settlement Day – Held on November 19th, Garifuna Settlement Day honours the arrival of the Garinagu people to Belize. Here in San Pedro, the day is celebrated with a cultural fair at Central Park where you can experience the music, dance and food of the Garifuna.

The Holiday Lighted Boat Parade – An island favourite ushering the Christmas Season, the San Pedro Holiday Boat Parade is fun for the whole family. Feel festive as you watch brightly decorated boats cruise along the coast of Ambergris Caye. There is no better way to get your holiday cheer on!

We are an island rich with culture and a vibrant history, a way of life worth celebrating!

San Pedro: From a Small Village to Belize’s Tourism Capital

September 9, 2020 by Richie Of Belize

Today, San Pedro is known to be a vibrant town, home to award winning resorts and restaurants. But just a couple decades back, this island was nothing more than a coastal fishing village. Before the golf carts, paved roads and all the other amenities we have come to love, the residents of San Pedro lived a much simpler life, a life supported by the bounties of the Caribbean Sea.

Like most of Belize, Ambergris Caye’s original inhabitants were the Maya. They left remarkable landmarks such as a man-made channel located at the northern most tip of the island separating Belize and Mexico as well as the Marco Gonzalez Archaeological Site. Ambergris Caye has also been the home of pirates, but it was refugees from neighbouring Mexico that truly shaped the island into what it is today.

In the late 1800s many refugees from the War of the Caste in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico found a safe haven on Ambergris Caye. Not only did this island offer protection from civil unrest, but the proximity of the Barrier Reef and lush environment guaranteed the people’s survival. The resilient settlers not only survived but flourished creating a little slice of paradise.

While much has changed over the years, the spirit to prosper has always been rooted in the community of San Pedro. The island culture and everyday life reflects our humble beginnings as fishermen and coconut farmers. And while development and new economic ventures continues to sprout, many continue carrying out the traditional profession that built La Isla Bonita.

Grab a Bite! Five Restaurants to visit on Ambergris Caye

September 9, 2020 by Richie Of Belize

Much likes its culture, Belize’s cuisine can best be describes as a melting pot of flavours. From roadside stands offering authentic local meals to an array of established restaurants recreating classic Belizean dishes with an upscale twist, there is something for everyone to sample.

As the hotspot for travellers, San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye is arguably the home to some of the best eateries across the country. Family-run establishments have curated their secret flavours passed on through many generations, while more contemporary restaurants continue to excite with new tastes.

Elvi's Kitchen

No trip to San Pedro is complete without a visit to this island favourite. Located in the heart of down town, Elvi’s Kitchen has been around for quite some time, never having compromised on quality or service. A family run restaurant with one of Belize’s top chefs behind the kitchen, Elvi’s is your stop for elevated Belizean classics.

(Open for lunch and dinner –  www.elviskitchen.com)

Blue Water Grill

As perfect as beach front dining spots can be, Blue Water Grill is a popular choice for both locals and tourists. Blue Water Grill offers international classics with a Caribbean twist in an ever evolving menu, not to mention, some of the best cocktails around. The restaurant also sponsors numerous charitable works, making you feel good about spending that extra dollar on the fourth and fifth cocktail.

Rain Restaurant and Rooftop Terrace

Looking for a fancy meal and spectacular views? Rain offers both! Located not of the bridge at the Grand Caribe Resort, this third fourth floor open-air restaurant specializes on Caribbean and International cuisine. We highly recommend going for cocktails during sunset for a breath taking view of the Barrier Reef and the leeward coast of Ambergris Caye. (Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner –  www.rainbelize.com)

Sandy Toes Beach Bar and Grill

What better way to enjoy life on an island than eating right on the beach? This beachside joint in the Boca del Rio Area is the perfect spot for a quick bite, cold cocktails and maybe a dip in the sea. While it edges more on the bar side, Sandy Toes still offer a full lunch and dinner menu with classic burgers and quesadillas. (Open for lunch and dinner – facebook.com/SandyToesBelize)

The Hidden Treasure

Rounding off our list is a hidden gem. Much like its name, Hidden Treasure is a bit off the beaten path, but offers dining you won’t soon forget. A combination of fine dining with a rustic flare, Hidden Treasure is the ideal spot for romantic candle lit dinners. From seafood to perfectly seared meats, they have dinning option for everyone.
